Breast MRI

MRI uses magnetic field and computer generated radio waves to create detailed images of the breast. Breast MRI produces hundreds of images of the breast, cross-sectional in all three directions (side-to-side, top-to-bottom and front-to-back). Breast MRI is a supplemental tool that offers valuable information about many breast conditions that cannot be obtained by other imaging modalities, such as mammography or ultrasound.

Our Technology 

Sansum Clinic's GE Healthcare Signa Explorer MRI scanner delivers exceptional imaging with quiet operation and patient-friendly design. Our scanner makes MRI easier for our patients as it is 40 percent quieter than traditional scanners and with a large opening measuring almost two feet in diameter, we can accommodate larger patients and provide more space for those who experience claustrophobia in the smaller spaces of a traditional scanner.

What to Expect

  • A member of our team will greet you and give you a gown to wear. You will need to remove all clothing and jewelry. 
  • If you get claustrophobic or experience pain while lying down, please tell your requesting physician before your breast MRI appointment. You might benefit from a mild relaxant and you will need the prescription before your breast MRI appointment.
  • During a breast MRI, you lie face down on the scanning table which will slide into the opening of the MRI machine during the exam. You won’t feel anything, but you will hear humming, clicking and knocking sounds. Earplugs will be provided. 
  • A contrast agent (dye) might be used to obtain additional information. The contrast will be injected through an IV placed in your arm prior to the exam. It is normal to experience a metallic taste in the back of your throat. This sensation should dissipate within a few seconds.
  • A technologist will be monitoring you from another room during the entire exam and you can speak to them at any moment. It is important to breathe normally and lie as still as possible. 
  • A breast MRI takes approximately 30 minutes to one hour.
  • After your breast MRI is complete, our breast radiologist will examine the images and report the results directly to your doctor.
